Aaptiv Audio Fitness App Review

Would you say you are a introvert or extrovert? Personally, I identify more with introverts. I don’t mind being social but it can really wear me out. I used to spend most of my days interacting with people at school, work, and sometimes both! This would take it’s toll and after a day filled with social interaction the last thing I wanted to do was go to the gym or workout class and be around even MORE people. 

This is why I always preferred to exercise on my own terms. From running to yoga, if I would do it alone or in the comfort of my own home, I was all over it! This is why I wish this app has been created years ago, I definitely could have used it! 

If you are an introvert or if you prefer to do your own thing than the Aaptiv Fitness App could be perfect for you! Full disclaimer: I LOVE this app so this review might be a little biased! But after you hear more about what Aaptiv has to over and when you try it, you’ll be in love with it too!

What is Aaptiv?

Aaptiv might be a new name on the black, but it’s not as new as you might think. This app has been formally known as “Skyfit”. To put it as simply as possible, Aaptiv is a app that offers audio fitness classes through your phone. These classes are lead by real and certified coaches to help you every step of the way! There are hundreds and hundred of different workouts and over 30 new classes are added every week. The audio guided workouts all have music that will help you stay with the pace of the workouts.

When I first tried out Aaptiv, the thing that surprised me the most way the wide variety of classes and workouts available. I’m a person that quickly gets bored or routine so this variety was very appealing. Audio classes are available for meditation, walking, the stairclimber, treadmill, outdoor running, elliptical, indoor cycling, yoga, and even strength training! There are also goal specific training programs like if you are training for a 5k, 10k, half and full marathons. Other goal specific programs include things like Run Faster, Run Further, Lose Weight, Get Stronger, etc.

On top of all that, Aaptiv also creates different challenges created by the app’s specialty trainers like Candice’s Christmas Recovery and Jessica’s Better Booty.

Running with Aaptiv

I have been a runner since high school. I’ve always liked how I can go for a run any time, all I would need is a a good pair of running shoes. While I might not be a very fast runner, I still enjoy it and I LOVE looking at my running stats. Aaptiv has audio workouts that are specifically for running, both treadmill and out door runs!

If you aren’t a runner, this app is perfect to get your started. When you select a running workout you will get helpful information so you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. Some of the running workout information that is visible before your start includes: 

  • Duration
  • Calories Burned
  • Miles
  • Max Speed

For me, music is essential while running and this app delivers upbeat music that goes along with the pace of the workouts. When the trainer speaks, the music will fade into the background so you can hear the trainer clearly. Afterwards, the music will smoothly transition to full volume.  Speaking of music, while you can’t play your own playlists, you can see what music genre each workout will feature.

So can take Aaptiv to the gym with you, but (for us introverts) you don’t need a gym at all! Many people have a gym simply so the can have assess to all those strength trainer machines. In reality, you can get a much better strength trainer workout through body weight workouts! This is where Aaptiv can help you excel. 

Aaptiv strength training workouts consist of circuit body weight workouts like lunges, squats, planks, sit-ups, push-ups, burpees, etc. In reality, they are pretty basic and you might ask yourself, why am I paying for someone to tell me to do squats? Well, if you didn’t have someone telling to to do squats, you most likely wouldn’t do them!

While wide variety of workout options are a great start, Aaptiv gives you even more options so you can fully customize your workout to fit your needs. As you browse classes, you can filter the results based on:

  • Workout Type (Running, Elliptical, etc)
  • Specific Trainers
  • Class Level (Beginner,  Intermediate, Advanced)
  • Duration
  • Music Genre

So whether you have 10 minutes or an hour, there is a workout that can fit your available time. The trainers guide you every step of the way and will instruct you on the proper form and let you know where the workout is headed. As you try out workouts and different trainers you will like some trainers more than others so it’s a nice feature that you can filter workouts by specific trainers.

Aaptiv Features

There are a few other cool features that I want to make sure I mention. First is your Profile. Here you can see a modern pie chart that shows you percentages of the types of workouts you have done. Here is where you can see a couple other fun stats like minutes worked out, distance covered, and calories burned. You can also set reminders. 

All workouts can be paused and you have the ability to skip ahead 30 seconds at a time if needed. Another feature that I enjoy is that you have the ability to save your favorite workouts to your collection so you have easy assess to them at any time. I know I said that I love variety, but sometimes I am in the mood for a workout that I’m already familiar with. You can also download workouts for offline use. This can really come in handy when you might not have access to the internet. 

Who is Aaptiv for? 

With the wide variety of workouts, trainers, and fitness levels there is something for everyone. It doesn’t matter if you are just starting out or a seasoned athlete, Aaptiv will have a workout that you will find appropriate and enjoyable. 

What I like about Aaptiv:
  • All Fitness Levels - I love how this app has workouts for all fitness levels. If you are just starting out, it can be scary to challenge yourself and try something new. Aaptiv makes it easy to train and build up your fitness level.
  • Option, option, and more options! - Hundreds and hundreds of workouts. You’ll have to see for yourself the wide variety of workouts available and more get added every week. It’s safe to say that you will never get bored. 
  • Convenient - This app is on your phone so it goes where you go! You can workout where you want and when you want. 
  • Time? - Not having the “time” to workout is the most common excuse people have for not exercising. With Aaptiv you can filter workouts based on the amount of time you have at your disposal. 10 minutes? 30 minutes? 1 hour? Aaptiv has a workout for you. 
  • Offline Use - You can download your favorite workouts so you can access them at any time. 
Things that you might not like:
  • Cost - Yes. This is a PAID app. And for good reason! There is no way you can expect to get such a huge variety of workouts by certified trainers for free! So yes, you do have to pay but if you use this app, the return on your investment will be huge! Plus this will cost you much less than a fitness class at a studio or a gym membership. 
  • You can pick your music - Unfortunately, you can’t play your own workout playlist while using this app. I thought I would hate this part of the app, but it’s not that bad! The music that the audio workouts feature is great and it will help you stay on pace with your workout. Every workout will also list the music genre that will be played so you can pick what you like. So when it comes to music, have a open mind!

What does Aaptiv Cost and How does it work?

Aaptive works through your smart phone. All you will need is a smart phone and a pair of headphones (I recommend wireless). If you are not sure if Aaptive will be something that you like, you can start out with a free trial. 

To start, get a free 30 day trial. If it’s something you enjoy and can see yourself using, you can continue your membership. After the free trial (if you decide to keep the app) you will be billed annually for 12 months of unlimited workouts. The cost comes out to $8.33 per month after the free trial. Keep in mind that you can cancel your membership at any time!

The other option is to jump in with a month-to-month payment option. You will get access to unlimited workouts and pay a monthly fee of $14.99. 

I think the price of Aaptiv is a bargain when you think about how costly fitness classes are at a studio or a gym membership. You can check the current price of memberships at aaptive.com.

So, if you haven’t already figured it out, I LOVE this app. Any I’m not the only one! Take a look at this app in the Apple App store and you will see it has over 4,000 reviews and the average rating is 4.7 out of 5 stars! It’s also ranked #12 app in the Health and fitness category. Here is a review that I thought really stood out:

This Aaptiv user was right on the money. These workouts and trainers will help you push yourself and test your limits. I’ve used the outdoor running workouts the most and I have seen a dramatic increase in both my speed and duration.  

Final Verdit

So....To download, or not to download? If you’re asking me, I’d say Download! Like, right now! I am still impressed with how much this app has helped me stay in shape and increase my athletic performance. It’s like I have a personal trainer by my side every step of the way. If you give this app a chance, it can change your trainer for the better. That’s pretty much all I can say about Aaptiv.
