Link between artificial sweeteners and fat retention 

After being told that sugar is bad for your health and can cause weight gain your first instinct is to swap sugar out with low or zero calorie artificial sweeteners. But is this really the best move? 

There are many "healthy" and "diet" foods that are labeled as such because they use artificial sweeteners and are therefore low in calorie content. A new study has revealed that consuming high amounts of these low-calorie sweeteners may actual promote fat formation rather than help with weight loss.

The specific type of artificial sugar the researches investigated is called Sucralose. Sucralose is 650 time sweeter than real sugar and it is used as a sugar substitute in a wide variety of products. The most well known product it's used in would be diet soda. It can be found in Splenda, gum, cereals and even your salad dressings!

Sucralose and fat build-up​

In the study Dr. Sen and his team of researches applied Sucralose to stem cells that were derived from human fat tissue. These stem cells were then exposed to this artificial sweetener for a period of 12 days. The dosage they exposed the stem cells to was equal to approximately a person drinking four cans of diet soda a day. 

​After the 12 day period the researches look a closer look and discover the stem cells showed an increase in indicators of fat production and an increase of fat droplet. 

To further investigate their finding, the researchers took biopsies of fat from 8 adults, 4 which were over weight and 4 that were of a normal weight. What they had in common was that all 8 were consuming low-calorie sweeteners. After comparing these samples with samples of adults that did not consume artificial sweeteners they discovered a couple interesting findings. ​

People that consumed artificial sweeteners showed an increase in glucose transportation into cells, more genes that are associated with fat production, and 2.5 time the amount of sweet taste receptors. ​

With these findings the team concluded that low-calorie sweeteners may effect the metabolism in such a way that it causes it to increase the formation and storage of fat. This is bad news for everyone consuming these artificial sweeteners thinking that they are making a healthy decision. ​

How to remove artificial sweeteners?​
