            Vi AI Personal Trainer Review

The strive to push yourself and give it your best is what makes a good runner. Wearable technologies like the Apple Watch and other fitness trackers have done a pretty great job at providing us with feed back about our runs. We can track our heart rate, speed, pace, distance, and everything in between! This is awesome but imagine taking things further and actually having a personal coach give you feedback while you are running! Well, the tech is finally here!

            What is Vi Personal Trainer?

Vi is a set of bluetooth headphones that come loaded with a AI virtual trainer. Vi can give you real time data and feedback on your run and give you advice along the way. It uses the data it collects to give you customized training workouts based on your biometric data and activity. Sounds pretty neat!

Sounds like Vi can really help people achieve their running goals. Whether you are running for weight loss, to just stay in shape or training for a race Vi could be the coach you need to take your run to the next level.

Vi is a fairly new product so there are some bugs that need to be worked out. With that being said it still is a pretty amazing product and it’s been featured on a number of popular media outlets like Business Insider, Macworld, Bloomberg, and even Sports Illustrated!

            Vi Earphones

Vi Personal Trainer Design and Features

A first look at Vi will look like a regular pair of collar design headphones. The round base will fit nicely around your neck and features power and volume controls. These are far from your normal collar headphones. Vi headphones feature a surprising amount of tech in such a small device. Vi has a few sensors including a 6-axis accelerometer, gyrometer, barometer, in-ear detection sensor, automatic speech recognition, earbud touch sensor and last but not least a heart rate monitor!

Even more impressive is that Vi has a complete built-in GPS tracker, something that a lot of other basic fitness trackers lack.  You can get access to location data by pairing the headset to your smartphone but I’ll go into that later. By having this ability Vi monitor could monitor cadence, heart rate, distance and even elevation.

Vi doesn’t just talk to you, it can also answer questions. For example you are ask it “Vi, what is my heart rate” and it will answer you. But let not get too far ahead. You can really interact with this gadget!

There are a few different fit options that you can try and customize to fit your ear. This makes the earphones very secure and they won’t slip out during runs. The overall quality of Vi is impressive. The collar band is even flexible so it can naturally flex with movement. It doesn’t bounce around during runs or slip to one side.

How does Vi Personal Trainer Work?

Getting started with Vi is very simple. First thing to do is customize Vi with the right fit of ear phones. Vi will come with a sizing kit that includes several different sizes of gel tips you can try so that the ear phones will be a perfect fit. This is a important part of getting started because if they don’t fit right they can fall out and they wont be able to track your heart rate accurately.

Next you will want to make sure that your Vi earphones are charged. They have a pretty good battery life too, one charge should last you up to 8 hours. I’m a pretty casual runner, I run about 4 to 5 times a week and a charge lasts me all week. So I only need to charge them about once a week which is nice.

To power up the headphones you just click the multifunction button on the right side of the neckband. From here Vi will talk to you and introduce itself. One thing you’ll quickly notice is that the voice isn’t a annoying robotic voice. It actually sounds pleasant and human.

            Vi AI Personal Trainer

            Vi AI Personal Trainer App

After your power them up the next thing to do is go to your smartphone’s app store and download the Vi app so you can pair your phone with your headset. Vi will ask you to pronounce your name and will be giving you personalized advice during your runs using your name. The app will ask your for basic information about yourself like your height, weight and goals. This helps Vi learn more about you so you can get customized training that is relevant to your fitness goals. A few of the goal options include running faster, running longer or losing weight.

After this initial set up you will have to click in about two hours of running with Vi. This is so that Vi has some base information about your running style and fitness level. After these two hours have been completed than Vi will start to coach you.

The app is easy to navigate and use. You can set different running goals like time and distance goals for your runs. After your workouts the app also offers graphs that display data from your run like heart rate, distance and progress. You can also view your historical data to see your progress over time. Some examples of data you can view is your average heart rate, pace, and distances of your runs.

            Vi Features

            Vi Performance During Runs

One feature of Vi that I thought was extremely helpful was it will notify me of my pace and any pace issues I have. So not only will Vi tell me my pace after every mile but it will monitor changes in my pace. For example it might notice that I started my run too fast and it will make me aware of this. It can also notify you of any big changes in pace during your run. In standard running apps I could look at my pace throughout the run but this information was only available after the fact. It’s a lot easier to adjust your pace in real time during your run.

I thought the heart rate monitor was also very accurate. They say that your heart rate is easier and more accurately tracked through your ear than on your wrist. The advice that Vi gives you is useful and it’s not overly repetitive which is nice because it doesn’t interrupt my running music too much.

You can talk to Vi and ask for stats easily by tapping your right earbud and speaking into the microphone. The only downside if there is a lot of background noice Vi might not catch what you are saying. This can be annoying because you are already winded from running and don’t feel like repeating yourself.

Vi offered me feedback on runs that I didn’t think was possible. It even could measure my stride length! It even offers to coach you to run with the correct stride by helping you run to a beat.

Where to buy Vi and Price?

You can buy Vi from the official website at getvi.com. This is where you will find the best deals on the product and take advantage of any sales and discounts. For example Vi usually retails for $249 but it’s on sale for $199 on the website (at the time of the review).
