Spire Fitness Tracker Review

Between counting calories and steps taken fitness trackers have forgotten about one of the most important things that can drastically effect our health: stress. Stress is one of the worst things that you could do to your body. Not only does it hurt your well being but stress hormones are the leading cause of fat storage. Stress can affects all aspects of your health and body. Stress can lead to heart attacks, insomnia, headaches, hair loss, high blood sugar, poor digestion, back and muscle pain, premature aging, weakened immune system and the list just goes on and on.

In short, managing stress is the single most important thing you could do to keep your health in track and even reduce fat storage in your body. While most fitness trackers do not pay attention to stress, Spire has made stress and stress management the top priority.

What is Spire?

Spire is a wearable device that tracks your breathing and monitors it to identify signs of stress and tension. When stress is identified you are alerted with a smart phone notification that brings this to your attention. From this you can discover when you are stressed, where it happened and what you were doing to cause it.

When stress is identified Spire also gives you guidance and introduces you to simple exercises that will once again clam and balance your mind. While tracking and managing stress is it’s top priority, thats not all that Spire does. Spire can also track the number of steps you take and the calories you burn throughout the day!

Spire Design

Spire is a neat little piece of tech that is small and compact. It’s light and feels like it was made from quality materials. Spire has a clip that is made of durable stainless steel and the body is covered in a soft fabric so that it feels comfortable when touching your skin. Spire was designed so that you wear it by clipping it to the inside of your clothing like around your waist band of if you are a lady it can clip to your bra.

While most wearables are made to be worn on the wrist, Spire is made to clasp onto your clothes. This can be seen as either a negative or positive aspect largely depending on your own personal taste. The draw back it that it can be easy to forget that Spire is clipped onto your clothes and when you are changing outfits you might forget to transfer the trackable over. A positive spin on this design is that it is discrete and hidden from view until most fitness trackers that are visible on your wrist.

While this is a clip-on I was really surprises how strong it was. It clips onto your clothes tightly so you don’t have to worry about it getting loose or falling off from movement. One draw back of the clip-on design is you can’t weak it if you aren’t wearing clothes or if your clothes don’t have a good place for it to clip on. This brings be to night time. Spire isn’t really designed to be worn at night, it’s more of a day time tracker. While they don’t currently have any sleep tracking, it is a feature that is being actively worked on so you will probably see it come out in the future.

All in all Spire has a pretty good design and feel to it. The little device will also come with a charging dock and uses wireless charging technology.

How does Spire work?

The main body of Spire can be referred to as the “stone”. You use Spire by clipping it to the inside of your waist band or on your bra where it can easily track and monitor your breathing. As you breath in and out Spire will monitor the expansion and contraction of your chest. It’s unique sensor will use algorithms to track your activity and breathing. Spire identifies your current state of being as one of the three main categories:

  • Calm - This is when you are stationary and your breathing rhythm is slow and smooth.
  • Focus - Here your body is still stationary but your breathing is still consistent but at a more medium speed.
  • Tension - While your body is stationary your breathing becomes erratic and elevated.

When it identifies Tension is will gently vibrate or send a notification to your phone to alert you. From here you can open the app and Spire will guide you through some simple and short exercise or you can partake in a mini-meditation session. The goal is to increase your focus and calm our mind.

Why is breathing so important?

Why is there such a focus on breathing with this fitness tracker? Well breathing can tell us a lot about our stress levels and breathing is responsible for delivering oxygen throughout our body. By following along with Spire’s breathing exercises you could lower your blood pressure, increase endorphins, and reduce muscle tension.

When you are stressed your health will suffer. Common symptoms of stress can include headaches, low energy, digestive issues, a weakened immune system, and wear on almost every organ in your body. Practicing mindful breathing will help you reduce stress and relax your body to it can go on functioning in optimal health.

Spire Features

While tracking you breathing and state of mind is pretty cool already, Spire has other awesome features as well. One thing you can do is set goals for each of the three states mentioned earlier. You can set goals like the number of steps you want to take each day or the amount of time you spend in a calm state of mind. You can also customize the types of notifications you get. For example, Spire can gently remind you to when you heaven taken a deep breath in a certain period of time or when you are entering a different state.

The only down side to these notifications is that you can’t tell what the vibrating notification means unless you fire up your phone. Spire’s connection to your phone is one big downside to this device. Spire must be connected to your phone to track breathing data. What this means is that the device can’t track and store this data internally and save it to back it up on your phone when it loses connection. This is pretty frustrating to have to be near you phone all the time, especially since the phone can be a huge stress factor sometimes.

While stress control and proper breathing are the focus, Spire also tracks other information fitness information about your day. Spire can track your active minutes, sedentary minutes, the number of steps you take and how many calories you burn through out your day.

Spire has about a 7 day battery life and is water resistant so you don’t have to worry about sweat or if you accidentally send the device through the laundry!

Spire Reviews and Testimonials - Who is Spire for?

Is Spire worth the money? Well over 1,000 people that gave Spire 5 out 5 ratings on Amazon seem to think so! This product also have over 500 five star ratings on it’s official website. Stress is a health concern that many other fitness trackers do not know how to track so this is very unique to this product. With that being said this device isn’t for everyone.

If you are a athlete you are going to want a fitness tracker that is more focused on measuring fitness and athletic performance. One of the most accurate and detailed fitness trackers I’ve come across is Biostrap which is the fitness tracker that I would recommend for athletes or people who are very much into fitness and working out. Biostrap claims to be the most advanced fitness tracker in the world.

Spire is for people that are more concerned about controlling stress in their lives. This is a great device if you are looking to identify stressors in your life and better control your stress. This is more of a stress management and mindfulness tracker than a classic fitness tracker.

If like the stress aspect in this fitness tracker but you wish it was more like the traditional fitness tracker in terms of features and tracking than I would recommend trying the Healbe GoBe 2. It is a very accurate fitness tracker than automatically measures your calorie intake and out put and it does feature a stress monitor. The stress monitor is not ad advanced as Spire but it offers many features that Spire does not like a heart rate monitor and sleep cycle tracking.
