Should Girls Strength Train?
The answer to that question is always YES! Strength or resistance training is key to toning up your body, losing weight and staying in shape. Cardio is only going to take you so far, the real results will show when you start including strength training in your fitness routine.
Three Types of Strength Training
There are three types of strength training methods and all have their merits.
1. Isometric: This is when you are working against a unmovable force, like the ground. Isometric training uses your own body weight. Examples of isometric workouts are pushups, squats, planks, etc. All you need for these are your body. Isometric workouts are my favorite because they require no equipment and will give you one hell of a workout! 2. Isotonic: Isotonic strength training would be workouts that include weight lifting; moving weight through a range of motion. Dumbbells and Kettlebells are prime examples. Sometimes isometric and Isotonic workouts can be combines. For example, you might be adding weights to your squats.
3. Isokinetic: This is when your muscles contract and shortens at a constant speed. A good example of these types of strength training are workouts that you would do with a exercise ball.
Reasons Why Girls Should Strength Train
1. You Wont Get Bulky: This is the most popular misconception of strength training. Girls avoid because they fear that they will gain muscle and look bulky. The truth is, you will end up building lean muscle. Bulking up in incredibly difficult to do, especially for females.
2. Stronger Core: Strength training is great for building and maintaining strong muscles. A strong core will give you better posture.
3. Good for Health: Strength training is also good for your health! It can help to lower bad cholesterol and lower blood pressure as well.
4. Better Sleep: Its also a great way to tire yourself out and make it easier to fall asleep. In fact, on statistic showed that 60% of people who weight train get an average of 7 or more hours a night!
5. Burn More Calories: Building muscles will increase that amount of calories that you burn 24/7. You'll burn more calories while resting since having muscle increases your basal metabolic rate.
6. Improves Mental Health: Strength training workouts have benefits for your mental health as well! Working out increases dopamine and serotonin levels in your brain. This makes strength training a natural antidepressant!
7. Burns Fats: Strength training is a great way to burn fat and it can burn more fat that a steady paced cardio workout. In fact, adding strength training sessions twice a week can reduce body fat by 7%!
